Frieze Masters 2024: Leonora Carrington, Wolfgang Paalen, Alice Rahon, Dorothea Tanning, and Remedios Varo

The Regent’s Park, October 9 - 13, 2024

“The sincerity of the artist consists, not in copying the reflection of the world on his retina, but in testifying with sincerity to all his sensations...”
– Wolfgang Paalen

Gallery Wendi Norris announces its presentation at Frieze Masters in London from October 9 - 13, 2024 featuring works by Leonora Carrington, Wolfgang Paalen, Marcel Jean, Bridget Tichenor, Alice Rahon, Dorothea Tanning, and Remedios Varo. Titled Landscapes of the Mind, the booth’s concept celebrates the 100th anniversary of the founding of Surrealism. Landscapes of the Mind showcases the war-wrought development of these artists, particularly the new cultural sources of inspiration they encountered in the New World. Moreover, the works offer an opportunity to delve into these artists’ internal mental states during a time of sweeping change.

Landscapes of the Mind anchors the booth with a major painting by Paalen entitled Combat of the Saturnian Princes III (1939), created just at the outbreak of WWII. Depicting figures locked in combat, the work embodies the anxieties of yet another world war on the horizon. Geographic and psychological, this painting encapsulates some of the most important markers of the Surrealist movement: war-forced migration and psychoanalysis.
