Art Basel 2024 | Unlimited

Messe Basel, Messeplatz 10, 4005 Basel, June 13 - 16, 2024

For Art Basel Unlimited, Gallery Wendi Norris proudly presents Untitled (mirror labyrinth) by gallery artist Eva Schlegel, in collaboration with Galerie Krinzinger and Bo Bjerggaard. Art Basel Unlimited provides an important exhibition platform for large-scale projects and takes place from June 10 – 16, 2024, public days June 13 - 16, 2024.

Eva Schlegel (b. 1960, lives and works in Vienna) explores the relationship between inanimate objects and human perception in her photographs, sculptures, and installations, especially the contradictions and ruptures that occur within. Though her large-scale sculpture Untitled (mirror labyrinth) features multiple mirrors, their arrangement prevents the viewer from seeing their
reflection. Instead, the mirror placement disorients and reflects fragmentary images of the surrounding space.

Looking at one’s reflection is an act of self-assurance about one’s existence, a paradigm that Eva Schlegel here disrupts. Through its playful quality and open structure, this labyrinth of steel elements and mirrors dissembles and deconstructs its surrounding environment, exploring new perspectives. The artist regards the mirror reflection as immaterial space, stating, in the words of philosopher Michel Foucault, that it is a utopia that exists in a "placeless place."

Untitled (mirror labyrinth) is a continuation of a body of work that includes Multiple Voices, Schlegel’s first public artwork in the United States currently on view at Oklahoma Contemporary.
