Between Here and There

convergence of insurgences
…
There is no outside nor inside
in the forest of prohibitions
the marvelous
sings
grab it
it is within reach of your hand
it is the moment when man
is
the accomplice of lightning
Crystalization
the vision of desire
the desire of vision
no here no there but in-between
here/there”
(Excerpts from “Circulatory Poem (for general disorientation)” by Octavio Paz, 1973)
The state of being caught in-between worlds captured in Octavio Paz’s poem is one well-known to artists living in exile. The artists included in this exhibition—Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Alice Rahon, and Wolfgang Paalen—all relocated to Mexico during WWII and, upon their arrival, found themselves suspended between their past lives and uncertain futures.
The works presented by Gallery Wendi Norris in this group exhibition embody the nature of exile, of reconciling old lives with new worlds, old myths with new landscapes, and convey a sense of both discovery and nostalgia. Between Here and There showcases artists whose lives straddled cultures and whose artworks serve as a bridge connecting the influences of their European roots with the inspiration of their newfound home: Mexico.
The fair will take place October 11 - 15, 2023.
