Peter Young and Maren Hassinger | Forms Unbound

Overview
Taking place across two venues, Forms Unbound pairs monumental paintings by Peter Young (b. 1940) with fluid sculptural works by Maren Hassinger (b. 1947). These two artists were raised in Los Angeles and came of age in New York City when Clement Greenberg’s ideas of formalism dominated the art world. Despite the prevalence of Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, Young and Hassinger developed unique artistic vocabularies and techniques. The works in this exhibition––Young's acrylic dot paintings and Hassinger's wire and fiber-based sculptures––transcend rigid formalistic views of art. Pairing these two boundary-defying artists together invites discussions around the limits, or lack thereof, of abstract or minimalist art; and how placing Young's and Hassinger’s work in conversation produces an environment for creative reflection that reaches beyond aesthetic dimensions.
